Due to its high redox potential, ozone has the fastest, most complete and deepest biocidal action in comparison with other chemicals. It acts on a wide range of microorganisms found in liquid and gaseous media.
Ozone is effective against viruses, in particular enteroviruses, which are even less resistant to its effects than bacteria.
To deactivate the bacteria present in water, a higher dose of ozone (0.5- 3.0 mg/l) is required, which ensures a reduction in the total number of bacteria by 90-99%, depending on the degree of water purification. At the same time, a deep inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms takes place. The antimicrobial activity of ozone increases in a liquid medium with acidic pH. Ozone affects the human cellular and humoral immunity: it stimulates the proliferation of immunocompetent cells and the synthesis of immunoglobulins, activates macrophages and increases the sensitivity of microorganisms to phagocytosis. The pathogenic microorganisms present in the human body are mostly anaerobes; ozone leads to an increase in the partial pressure of O2 in tissues and improves the transport of oxygen in the blood, which, as a result, leads to a change in cellular metabolism, in particular, to activation of aerobic processes (glycolysis, Krebs cycle, oxidation of fatty acids), and, consequently, to the death of anaerobic microorganisms.
The human skin is home to many pathogenic microorganisms that do not show their pathogenicity in its normal state. In the damaged tissue, these microorganisms show their invasiveness; in poorly healing wounds in the deep layers of the dermis, anaerobic microorganisms (for example, Bacteroides, Clostridium) can cause suppurations due to the fact that they are remote in relation to the antimicrobial effect of air oxygen. The aerobic microorganisms such as Staphylococcus epidermis, Corynebacteria and Propionobacteria, which usually also live on human skin, can cause skin damage if the integrity of the skin is disturbed.
In addition, ozone is an important component in the immune system: the bactericidal and virulidal properties of antibodies are based on their ability to stimulate active oxygen species, including ozone. In this case, activated neutrophils are able to form singlet oxygen; singlet oxygen, in combination with ozone and water, forms a hydroxyl radical and hydrogen peroxide; ozone, when interacting with hydrogen peroxide, forms an even more active compound — peroxone, formation of which has a “directional” character — the fight against viruses and pathogenic strains.
